When does your X (Twitter) DM limit reset? A free calculator

Type when your first DM went out. See when you can DM again.

You can DM again 10:30 AM tomorrow

How long does the Twitter DM limit last?

About 25 and a half hours from each message. X's wording says 24 hours, but in our logs from 26 September to 19 October 2026 it still counted sends up to 25 hours 28 minutes old. The limit comes back one message at a time, in the order you sent them, not at midnight.

The window rolls from your own first message, not from midnight. Each send frees up on its own, in the order you sent them. If you sent 35 between 9 and 11 in the morning, they free up between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM the next day.

X's wording says 24 hours, but its count runs a little longer. On 26 September 2026 we checked 180 refusals on 21 Premium accounts. In 147 of them, X still counted a send from up to 30 minutes past 24 hours.

Some sends counted for longer still. From 26 September to 19 October 2026, X refused Premium accounts at their cap 59 times while still counting a send more than 24 hours old. In 58 of those, the oldest send it counted was no more than 25 hours 28 minutes old. So the calculator gives one time: 25 and a half hours after your first send. That is how long Xsender waits before an account at its cap sends again. It is our margin, not a rule X publishes, and X can still refuse now and then.

Which DMs count toward the Twitter DM limit?

X caps first messages to people who do not follow you, called message requests: 7 per 24 hours on a free account, 35 on Premium, 75 on Premium Plus and 500 on Premium Business. Replies in a chat you already have do not count, so an account at its cap can still answer everyone who writes back.

X shows no counter as you get close. On a free account the first sign is a notice that you hit the daily limit; on Premium it is error 226. The X DM limit, plan by plan has the full table and the 500 a day total, and what error 226 means covers a 226 well under the cap.

How the calculator works

The sums run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or kept anywhere, and the times use the clock and time zone of your own device.

The caps come from X's help page on Chat, in an archived copy of 4 August 2026, confirmed live on 5 October 2026. The 25 and a half hours come from our own sending logs, with the dates given above. Our DM limit study has the method and a CSV of the totals.

Some things it cannot know. X publishes no hourly limit, and our sends were spaced 3 to 5 minutes apart, so we have not tested fast bursts. No account in our study was on Premium Plus or Premium Business, so the 75 and 500 caps come from X alone. X can change any of these numbers, and we date each one so you can check.

Trying a refused send again rarely helps. In the week before 3 September 2026, our founder's workspace retried 662 refused sends, and 11 went through. Keep one spare as well. In our logs, X sometimes counted one more send than we had recorded, so Xsender stops one short of the cap.

FAQ

Does the Twitter DM limit reset at midnight?

No. X counts "in a 24-hour period" from each send. Your limit comes back one message at a time. Xsender waits 25 and a half hours from each one before it sends again.

Does the calculator know how many I have sent?

No. It works only from the time you type, and it never connects to your X account. That is why the result is a time to plan by, not a promise.

Why did X refuse me after 24 hours had passed?

X keeps counting a little past 24 hours. In 59 refusals in our logs, it still counted a send more than 24 hours old. In 58 of them, none was older than 25 hours 28 minutes. So we wait 25 and a half hours.

Can you bypass the Twitter DM limit?

No. Only waiting gives an account its sends back, and retries rarely work (11 of 662 in our test). To send more, use Premium (35 a day, not 7) or more X accounts. Each one has its own cap.

Can I see how many I have left inside X?

No. X shows no counter and gives no warning as you get close. Count your own first messages from the last day.
