Cold DM generator for X (Twitter): three openers, free

Three short first DMs, plus the follow-up for when they reply.

Tone

Example: openers and a follow-up for a bookkeeper

We typed Bookkeeping for small marketing agencies as the offer and Founders of small marketing agencies as the people to reach, with a plain tone. This is the kind of answer the generator gives back. We wrote it by hand, and it passes the same checks.

  1. Opener 176 characters

Hey {{firstName}}, can I ask you a quick question about your agency's books?

Why it works. Ask first: it only asks if you can ask something. Replying is easy, and your offer waits for the next message.

  2. Opener 266 characters

Hey, quick question, do you still do your agency's books yourself?

Why it works. Yes means fit: one easy yes or no question. A yes tells you they could buy, so you know who to pitch.

  3. Opener 373 characters

Hey, who does the books at your agency right now, you or someone you pay?

Why it works. This or that: a two-option question about how they do it today. Their answer tells you what to say next.

After they reply

Send this to anyone who answers. If they replied to the Ask first opener, send your Yes means fit question before it.

Follow-up135 characters

Got you. I do the bookkeeping for small marketing agencies. I made a short checklist of easy wins for agency books, mind if I share it?

  1. They say yes to your free thingGreat, let's hop on a quick call. I'll walk you through it and look for more ideas for you. You down for that?
  2. They say yes to a callAwesome, here's my calendar, book any time that works for you. [your booking link]
  3. They say no at any pointNo worries, let me know if you change your mind.

Answer within the hour while they are still in the chat.

What gets cold DMs replies on X: our numbers

The generator follows what we have seen in real campaigns. These counts come from first messages sent on Xsender from 7 September 2026 to 26 October 2026, and from our own outreach.

  • Short openers get the replies. Openers that were only a greeting, like Hey or Hello, got 2.2 replies per 100 sends (12,531 sends). A greeting with one easy question got 1.7 per 100 (11,378 sends).
  • The list matters more than the words. One-word greetings got 0.8 replies per 100 on one user's lists and 3.4 on another's. Find people who fit before you rewrite anything.
  • Ask a question whose yes means they could buy. In our own outreach, 27% of the people who said yes to "do you do cold outreach?" became real leads, against 6% of those who said no.
  • Pitch in the second message. Once they reply, say what you do and offer one small free thing. Send the link and the call only after they say yes.
  • Answer fast while they are in the chat. When a lead was writing back within the hour, 77% kept talking if we answered within the hour too, against 53 to 57% if we took longer.

About 1 to 3 replies per 100 sends is a good result for openers like these.

How to write a cold DM: the rules every opener follows

Each rule comes from one of our cold DM guides. The generator checks every draft against them before you see it.

  1. Pitch nothing in the first message. The openers that got replies on our users' campaigns were a greeting or one short question. X lets one message into a pending request until the person accepts it, so that message only has to start the chat. Your offer goes in the follow-up. Cold DM templates.
  2. Short: 120 characters at most. Write it like a text to a peer, in one or two short sentences. The follow-up can run to 240 characters. Cold DM templates.
  3. One easy question. Each message ends on one question someone can answer in a few seconds. A greeting alone gets a few more replies, but a question tells you who could buy, so every opener asks one. The generator rejects any draft with no question or with two. Cold DM reply rate.
  4. No link, no image. X's spam rules name DMs that are links shared without commentary. Link previews in a request stay hidden until the person accepts, and X treats graphic media from a stranger like spam. Send the link once they say yes. What lands a DM in Hidden.
  5. Written for the whole list. Each message says only what is true for everyone you named. It never invents a post, a compliment, a client or a result. {{firstName}} is optional: Xsender fills it in for every lead. Cold DM templates.
  6. Plain words, and only numbers you typed. No hype words, no dashes, no emoji. A number appears only if you typed it, because a result you cannot show costs you the reply. Cold DM templates.

How the cold DM generator works

You type two short lines. Our server checks them, then asks an AI model for three drafts. Our own code then checks each draft for length, one question, links, emails, phone numbers, placeholders, dashes and hype words.

A draft that fails gets one more try. If it fails twice, you get a note, not a bad opener. The rules were last checked against our guides on 4 November 2026.

The generator does not know your offer the way you do. Read each opener and change anything that is not true for you.

What to do with your three openers

  • Put all three in one campaign as versions. From 2 July to 5 October 2026, the median campaign on our software rotated 5 versions of one message. That shows you which line works.
  • Send each version to about 1,000 people before you judge it. At a 1% reply rate, 1,000 sends bring about 10 replies.
  • Check the list before you rewrite the words. In our own outreach in September 2026, people who commented on a startup post replied with interest 3.0% of the time. Followers of big marketing accounts replied 0.3% of the time. Find people to send it to with our free lead finder.
  • Mind the daily cap. X lets a free account send 7 first messages a day and a Premium account 35. The X DM limit, plan by plan has the full table.

FAQ

Is the cold DM generator free?

Yes. You get 5 tries a day without an account, and 20 a day when you are signed in to a free Xsender account. Each try writes three openers and a follow-up.

Why is there no link in any opener?

X counts DMs that are mostly links as spam, and link previews stay hidden until the person accepts your request. Send the link after they reply.

What does {{firstName}} do?

It is a placeholder. When Xsender sends the message, it puts each lead's first name there. If you send by hand, swap it for the name yourself. Openers work without a name too.

Why do the openers not say what I sell?

Because the openers that got replies on our users' campaigns pitched nothing. They said hello or asked one easy question. The follow-up says what you sell, once the person has replied.

Can I send the same opener to everyone on my list?

Yes. On our software, one version of one message went to 8,058 people between July and October 2026. The usual stop for those accounts was X's daily cap, not the repeated text.

What reply rate should I expect?

About 1 to 3 replies per 100 sends is a good result for openers like these. Across our users' campaigns since 7 September 2026, short openers got about 2 replies per 100. Who you send to matters more than the words.

What happens to what I type?

Your two lines go to our server and to an AI model, which writes the drafts. Our own rules check every draft before you see it. We do not save your words in our database or send them to our analytics.
