The surest way to stay out of Hidden is not to send a request at all. Get a follow back, use an old chat, or ask for their X Number. X only says that its AI, Grok, sorts each request into Priority or Hidden. It does not say what Grok looks at. If you must send a request, leave out links and media.
Most cold DMs are requests, so this sort decides whether yours sits in the Priority tab or in the one that is easy to miss.
What X says about the Hidden tab
X has published four short lines about how requests are sorted, and nothing more. Here they are, each with what it means for a sender:
| X's words | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Grok "is used to help classify" requests into Priority or Hidden. | A model decides, and X does not list its signals. |
| A quality filter "hides conversation requests we think may be lower quality". | It is on by default in the apps, and the person gets no alert. |
| Graphic media from a stranger is treated "like spam". | Send no images in a first message. |
| On x.com, the second tab "may be spam or lower priority". | x.com calls the Hidden tab Other. |
So any page that lists Grok's exact triggers is guessing. One rule applies whichever tab you land in: X says "You may not send unsolicited Direct Messages in a bulk or automated manner". That covers every sender and every tool, ours included.
How to skip message requests entirely
A DM only becomes a request when the person does not follow you and you have no chat yet. Find your case in the left column:
| Your situation | Where your DM lands |
|---|---|
| They follow you, or you already have a chat. | Their main inbox. |
| They gave you their X Number. | Their main inbox, even if it is closed. |
| Neither, and their inbox is open. | Requests, sorted by Grok. |
| Neither, and their inbox is closed. | Nowhere. X asks for their X Number. |
That makes the timeline the best way in. A useful reply to someone's posts earns some follow backs, and then your first DM skips Requests. Who can get a DM from a stranger on X covers the settings on their side.
What X treats as spam in DMs
X's spam rules name three kinds of DM. The first is "sending identical direct messages". The second is DMs that are mostly links "shared without commentary", and the third is a high volume of DMs that nobody asked for. Its DM FAQ adds that one text or link sent to many people "may" pause your DMs for at least 30 minutes.
Our data on copies points another way. One message in one campaign went to 8,058 people between July and October 2026, and the usual stop for those accounts was the daily cap. Links are a different story, since previews stay hidden until the person accepts, so a link in a first message adds risk and shows nothing.
New accounts also draw extra checks. In our 21 day study of 30 accounts, to 1 September 2026, all 9 phone or puzzle checks came in an account's first week. X locks accounts that show "suspicious levels of activity", and a brand new account sending to strangers fits that picture.
Can you tell if it landed in Hidden?
Not from your side. X sends no read receipt on a request until it is accepted, so silence looks the same in both tabs. You can test it, though, by sending your first message to a second account of yours that does not follow you, then checking which tab it reached.
One test is not every inbox, because Grok may weigh the person as well as the message. How to see message requests on X shows both tabs as the person sees them, with screenshots from x.com.
If you send the same opener to a long list, Xsender rotates up to 5 versions of it, fills in each person's name and spreads the sends under each account's cap. From July to October 2026, the median campaign on it used all 5.
FAQ
Why do my DMs go to message requests?
Your DMs go to message requests because the person does not follow you and you have no chat with them yet. X files a first message from a stranger under Requests, and Grok sorts it into Priority or Hidden.
Does X Premium get your DM into Priority?
X does not say so. Premium opens inboxes set to verified users only, and it lifts your daily cap from 7 to 35 first messages. Nothing X has put out says the blue check helps with the sort, and we have not measured it. What X Premium changes for cold DMs covers what it does do.
Do links send a cold DM to Hidden?
X does not say that exactly, but it does call DMs that are mostly links spam. Link previews also stay hidden until the person accepts, so a link in a first message shows nothing yet. Send it after they reply.
Does sending the same message to many people land it in Hidden?
X has not said so, and we cannot see other people's tabs, so we cannot measure it either.
