You can send cold DMs on X without Premium, but a free account starts only 7 new chats with strangers a day. Premium costs $8 a month and raises that to 35. Its blue check also opens inboxes that take DMs only from verified users. A free account cannot reach those.
So the real question is volume. If you plan to write to more than about 200 new people a month, Premium is the simplest way there. The sums below show why a second account often beats a pricier plan.
What each X plan lets you send
X caps message requests, which are first messages to people who do not follow you, at a different number for each plan. Prices are as X lists them for the US web:
| Your plan | Price a month | First messages a day |
|---|---|---|
| Free. | $0. | 7. |
| Basic. | $3. | Not listed by X. |
| Premium. | $8. | 35. |
| Premium Plus. | $40. | 75. |
| Premium Business. | From $200. | 500. |
Every plan except Business also shares a ceiling of 500 DMs a day in total, replies included. Few cold senders get near it, because the cap on first messages bites long before. How the two X DM limits work explains how the two limits interact and when each one resets.
What Premium changes for cold outreach
Premium changes two things that matter for cold DMs, and the first is the daily cap. Going from 7 first messages to 35 gives you five times the reach. In our 21 day study the gap even showed in how X said no. The 3 free accounts that reached 7 got a polite daily limit notice, while all 23 paid accounts that stopped at 35 got error 226.
The second is the blue check, because some people take requests only from verified users. X's help page says a message gets through when the person "is Verified and has opted in to receive Chat messages from other Verified users". Without the check, those inboxes stay closed to you.
What Premium does not change
A paid plan does not open an inbox that is closed to strangers. If someone takes DMs only from people they follow, no plan gets you in, and the ways to reach someone who does not follow you lists the ways that still work.
Nor does it buy a pass on X's rules. They say "You may not send unsolicited Direct Messages in a bulk or automated manner". That applies to Premium accounts just as it does to free ones, and to every tool, ours included. X also does not say that your plan changes where your request lands in the other person's inbox.
Is a second account cheaper than Premium Plus?
Usually it is. Two Premium accounts send up to 70 first messages a day for $16, while one Premium Plus account sends 75 for $40. The last column is what each step up costs per extra message, over a 30 day month at full use:
| The step | Extra cost and messages | Per message |
|---|---|---|
| Free to Premium. | $8 for 840 more. | 1 cent. |
| A second Premium account. | $8 for 1,050 more. | Under 1 cent. |
| Premium to Premium Plus. | $32 for 1,200 more. | 2.7 cents. |
| Premium Plus to Business. | $160 for 12,750 more. | 1.3 cents. |
Real costs run a little higher, since a typical account on Xsender sends about 28 first messages a day rather than the full 35. A second account also means a second profile to keep alive, and X allows one person up to ten, each with its own purpose. How many X accounts you can run for outreach covers those rules.
Business is a different product. X says it gets "significantly elevated" DM limits but names no number, and we have not tested it.
Running two or more Premium accounts by hand means counting each one's 35. Xsender learns each account's cap from X and keeps the account under it.
When a free account is enough
A free account is enough when you are testing one opening line or when your leads accept requests from anyone. It also works when most of your DMs are replies, not first messages. At 7 a day, about 210 a month, it shows you whether a message works before you spend anything.
It stops being enough once the list grows. A list of 500 people takes about ten weeks at 7 a day, and about two weeks at 35. If you are at that point and comparing software as well as plans, the X DM automation tools roundup shows what each tool costs at your account count.
FAQ
Does X Premium Basic raise the DM limit?
X does not say, because Basic is missing from its table of message request caps. Basic also comes without the blue check, so it cannot reach verified only inboxes. We have not tested a Basic account.
Is Premium Business worth $200 a month for cold DMs?
For most senders, no. Premium Business costs 25 times as much as Premium for about 14 times the first messages, and five Premium accounts send 175 a day for $40.
Does X Premium get more replies to cold DMs?
X does not publish that, and we have not measured it. Premium does let you reach verified only inboxes, which a free account cannot.
