X lets one person run up to ten accounts, as long as each one has its own purpose. For cold DMs, each account gets its own daily cap of 7 first messages on a free plan or 35 on Premium. How many you need depends on your reply rate. In one vendor's data, bigger operations got lower reply rates.
How many X accounts one person can run
X's Authenticity policy lets one person run up to ten accounts, as long as each has a different purpose. A founder account, a company account and a support account fit that rule. Ten copies of the same sales account do not.
The same policy lets people run accounts for someone else, naming "Social Media Managers" as long as no rule is broken. So an agency can operate client accounts on top of its own. One phone number can sit on up to 10 accounts. How agencies run 1 to 20 client accounts walks through the setup.
The penalty for getting this wrong is steep. X's rules ban look-alike accounts that do the same job, and its Authenticity policy says you "may be asked to choose one account to keep", while the rest are suspended. Its automation rules add one line that covers every account and every tool, ours included: "You may not send unsolicited Direct Messages in a bulk or automated manner".
How many first messages each account adds
Each account has its own cap on first messages to people who do not follow it, and replies do not count. Multiply your plan's number by your account count:
| Your X plan | Message requests per 24 hours |
|---|---|
| Free | 7 |
| Premium | 35 |
| Premium Plus | 75 |
| Premium Business | 500 |

At full use, ten Premium accounts could start 350 chats a day. Real accounts run below the cap, though. Our own logs cover 46 accounts from 2 July to 5 October 2026. On a typical sending day, one of them sent about 28 first messages, or roughly 850 a month. Whether you need X Premium for cold DMs works through the cost of each plan.
Do more accounts bring more replies?
Not in the largest dataset we know of. Xreacher, a rival cold DM tool, measured 43.7 million first DMs in the 180 days to 3 July 2026 and split the reply rate by how many accounts a sender ran:
| Accounts sending | Reply rate |
|---|---|
| 1 account. | 2.24%. |
| 2 or 3 accounts. | 2.51%. |
| 11 or more accounts. | 0.39%. |
Senders on 11 or more accounts sent 97.5% of the DMs and got the lowest rate. Run the sums at our typical 850 a month: one account at 2.24% brings about 19 replies, while eleven accounts at 0.39% bring about 36. That is eleven times the accounts for less than twice the replies.
It is a pattern in one vendor's data, not proof that the extra accounts caused it, but it is a good reason to grow slowly.
How many accounts you need
Work back from the replies you want. Two lines of arithmetic do it:
First messages a month = replies you want / your reply rate.
Accounts = first messages a month / 850 on Premium.Say you want 20 replies a month and your rate is 1%. That is 2,000 first messages, which three Premium accounts cover at a typical pace. If you do not know your rate yet, start with one account for a few weeks and measure it, because a wrong guess at the rate changes the answer more than anything else. Reply rates on X, measured and claimed shows what to expect.
What each extra account costs you
Each account needs its own purpose and profile, $8 a month for Premium if you want 35 a day, and someone to answer its replies. It also needs care in its first week. In our 21 day study of 30 accounts, all 9 checks in that study came in an account's first week. Pass any check before you send more.
From 2 July to 5 October 2026, none of the 46 X accounts Xsender ran was suspended. 9 had a temporary phone or puzzle check. That is a record, not a promise.
If you run several accounts with our tool, each one needs its own Chrome profile that stays open. Each account on one computer also shares the same internet address. Within those limits, running 1 to 20 accounts from one screen, each stopped at its own cap, costs $59 for one account, $264 for ten and $400 for twenty. Twenty only fits when some of them are client accounts.
Past 20 accounts, or if no computer can stay on, a cloud tool may suit you better, and our comparison with Xreacher sets the two side by side.
FAQ
Can several X accounts share one phone number?
Yes. X's help page says one phone number can be added to up to 10 accounts.
Is it against X's rules to cold DM from several accounts?
Running several accounts is allowed when each has its own purpose, but X forbids duplicate accounts. Its rules also say "You may not send unsolicited Direct Messages in a bulk or automated manner", however many accounts you use.
How many X accounts does an agency need?
An agency needs one account per real purpose. Client accounts count separately, because X allows social media managers to run them. Running X outreach for clients covers the costs at 1 to 20 accounts.
