Can you mass DM on Twitter (X)? What X actually allows

Group DMs on X, the daily caps by plan, what 8,058 sends of one template ran into, and the opt-in version of mass DMs that X does allow in its rules.

No. X has no button that sends one private message to a crowd of strangers, and its rules ban bulk DMs nobody asked for. A group chat reaches up to 256 people, but only your followers. Strangers get one first message at a time, inside a daily cap. At the typical pace of the customer accounts we run, 5,000 strangers take one Premium account about six months.

Can you send one DM to many people?

Only people who follow you, and only in a group. X's help page says you can start a group chat "with anyone who follows you", and a group holds up to 256 people. Everyone in it sees every reply, and only the admin can remove members.

That makes a group good for a launch note to your own followers or a small community. It is a poor fit for selling, because one person's question or complaint lands in front of everyone else.

What X's rules say about mass DMs

X's automation rules say "You may not send unsolicited Direct Messages in a bulk or automated manner". That sentence covers anyone sending at volume, by hand or with any tool, ours included. X's spam rules add "sending identical direct messages" to the same list.

X also closes the obvious loophole. Its rules say that someone being "technically able to receive a Direct Message from you" does not mean they asked for automated ones.

The allowed version is narrower but real. Automated DMs are fine when the person asked first, for example by messaging you, and you give them an easy way to opt out. X even lists "Run creative campaigns that auto-reply to users who engage with your content" as something you may do. So "reply GUIDE and I will send it to you" fits the rules, while 5,000 scraped handles do not.

What one account can really send

Two limits apply. All DMs together, replies included, stop at 500 a day on every plan but Premium Business. First messages to people who do not follow you have a much smaller cap, set by your plan.

In practice, accounts send fewer than the cap. On the 46 accounts we ran from 2 July to 5 October 2026, a typical sending day was about 28 first messages, roughly 850 a month. That is why big lists need more accounts or more patience, and the sums for 1 to 20 X accounts show how many.

Does one template for everyone get you flagged?

Not in our data. On the 46 accounts Xsender ran, templates went out with names filled in and minutes between sends. One version of one message reached 8,058 people, and the usual stop was the daily cap. From 2 July to 5 October 2026, none of the 46 X accounts Xsender ran was suspended. 9 had a temporary phone or puzzle check. That is a record, not a promise.

Do mass DMs get replies?

About one in a hundred, on average. Campaigns on our software averaged 1.2% from 23 August to 22 September 2026, and single scripts ran from about 1% to 8%. 12 cold DM scripts for X shows the short shape we use.

Who you write to moves the number more than how many, and which X lead lists actually reply has our counts by list.

Two ways to reach a lot of people

If you want hundreds of conversations, pick the route that matches who you are writing to:

  • People who asked. Offer something in a post and send it by DM only to people who reply. Tell them how to stop, and honour it at once.
  • Strangers, one at a time. Write three to five versions of a short first message, fill in each name, and send inside each account's cap.

On the second route, every account has its own cap and its own 24 hour window to track. Xsender sends your versions to the list, one lead at a time, and stops each account at what X allows it that day. It sends one first message per lead and no follow-ups.

FAQ

Can I use a group DM to reach leads?

Only leads who already follow you, because a group can include only your followers. Everyone in a group sees every reply, so it suits an announcement better than a pitch.

Can I DM all my followers at once?

Not privately. A group of up to 256 followers sees every reply. To reach each follower alone, you send separate messages, and the 500 a day ceiling on all DMs still applies.

How many cold DMs can I send a day on X?

It depends on your plan: 7 first messages to strangers on Free, 35 on Premium, 75 on Premium Plus and 500 on Premium Business. Every DM you send, cold or not, also counts toward a total of 500 a day, except on Premium Business.

Try it on your own X accounts. See plans and the 7-day trial
