"You can no longer send messages to this person" means a chat that used to work has been shut from their side. They blocked you, unfollowed you, or closed their DMs. Only a block shows up on their profile. If your other chats still send, your account is fine. Sending again rarely helps: in one audit on 3 September 2026, 11 of 662 tries got through.
What "you can no longer send messages" means
X will not take a new message in this chat, although the history stays where it was. The words "no longer" are the clue: the chat was open once, and something on the other person's side changed. X's help pages do not explain this exact line, so the causes below come from X's rules on who can write to whom.
The message is not new, and it is not a sign of a recent change at X. Users posted it on X as early as 29 September 2019 and again on 3 February 2023, some with "Direct Messages" in place of "messages".
Blocked, unfollowed or DMs closed?
Each cause leaves a different trace, so you can usually tell them apart in a minute. Start with their profile, then think back to whether they ever replied:
| What happened | How to tell, and what still works |
|---|---|
| They blocked you. | X shows a notice on their profile. Nothing works, so move on. |
| They closed their DMs, and you only ever sent a request. | They never replied, and X now asks for their X Number. Reply to a post, or ask for the number. |
| They unfollowed you, and their DMs are open to people they follow. | No notice, and they did reply once. A follow back opens it again. |
| Their account is gone (reported). | The profile will not load. There is nothing to do. |
Why a reply from them changes the odds
A chat they answered is harder to shut than a request they ignored. X's DM help page says a new DM setting does not stop a chat that is "already established". Its Chat page also lets you write if "you already have a Chat with them". X does not define either phrase.
Our reading is this: if the person never replied, your chat was still a request, and closing their DMs ends it. If they did reply, a setting change is the least likely cause, which moves a block or an unfollow to the top of the list.
First, rule out your own account
Before you blame the other person, send a reply in a different chat. If that one fails too, the problem is a limit or a check on your account, and the list of errors in why a message is not sent on X will match it. If the other chat goes through, the cause is this person, and the table above applies.
When X asks for an X Number on the chat screen, their setting is what shuts you out. What a closed inbox on X means explains that screen and the ways around it.
What will not bring the chat back
Most causes only lift when the other person changes something, so sending again just spends a send. A blue check will not get you in either, since it opens only inboxes set to verified users. Nor will a second account, which they do not follow any more than the first.
On a long list, some people shut their DMs between the day you build the list and the day you reach them. Xsender checks each person at the moment of sending, so those leads are skipped instead of written to.
FAQ
Can I still read our old messages?
Yes. The chat history stays where it was. X only stops new messages in that chat.
Will "you can no longer send messages" go away on its own?
Only if the person opens their DMs, follows you back or unblocks you. X's help pages describe no alert when that happens, so check their profile now and then instead of resending.
Is it the same as "You cannot send chats to this person"?
Close, going by user reports. That line shows when a chat never opened in the first place. The checks are the same: look for a block, then think about their DM setting.
